Add a URL to Google!
Updated 9/27/98:
News
- 9/22: New much larger index is coming as soon as we can get it up.
- 8/1: Clicking on a red bar will show you backlinks (citations) for that page.
- 7/27: Search all major Linux sites using Google! Linux Search. E.g. try a search for "distribution".
- 7/25: Fixed many bugs. Should be much more stable and reliable now. Also, performance of fetching more results has been improved.
- 6/28: Add a colorful link to Google! from our new stickers page.
Tips and Bugs
- Use as few words as possible. Avoid common words. All searches execute using an
AND of all the words.
- Proximity (distance between query terms in the proximity) is taken into account on all queries.
- Google! does not stem: "house" gives different results than "houses".
- Very common words like "the" are removed from queries. To force one of these words, use plus: "+the".
- Fetching 100 results takes longer than the default 10.
- The PageRank rankings (red bars) are currently in a state of flux, and are not being
computed the way we would like. We hope to solve the problem soon.
-
This new index contains only a very limited number of international pages
because we do not want to congest busy international links.
- Google! is research in progress and there are only a few of us
so expect some downtimes and malfunctions.
- The "I'm feeling lucky" button takes you to the first search result.
- 10^100 is a googol, but we liked the spelling "Google!" better.
- We can be reached at google@google.stanford.edu and we appreciate your comments.
